Paintless Dent Repair

What is Paintless Dent Repair?

Many people ask “What is paintless dent repair?” – and unfortunately can choose the wrong company to handle their hail-damaged vehicle. Paintless Dent Repair (PDR), also known as “paintless dent removal”, uses a specialized set of dent removal tools and techniques to gently remove minor dents and dings from the body panels of a vehicle. Increasingly, insurance companies are adopting the IntelliDent paintless dent repair process as a standard part of their quotation process.

A wide range of damage can be repaired using PDR, most commonly:

  • Hail Damage
  • Door Dings
  • Minor Body Creases
  • Minor Bumper Indentations

Ultimately, the more shallow the dent, the greater the chance of the Paintless Dent Repair technique being a suitable option. Even dents with a several-inch diameter can be repairable with the PDR method, as long as the dent is shallow and the panel has no metal creasing or folding.

History of Paintless Dent Repair

Like most ingenious ideas, paintless dent repair was discovered without planning. Oskar Flaig, a Mercedes staff member that worked trade shows in the 60’s, got sick and tired of having to constantly fill dents and repainting Mercedes vehicles that had been damaged throughout their stay at these trade fairs.

This took a long time and it was constant tedious work.

An epic small dent & ding repair discovery was made one night at a trade show in New York City. While racking his brain trying to think a faster way to repair these dents, he saw the end of his hammer sticking out of his tool bag. He grabbed the hammer and carefully pushed out one of the dents using the rubber end. Thinking this would simply make the dent filling process easier, he was amazed when he discovered that the dent was gone!

This is how paintless dent repair was born!

Paintless Dent Repair Blasts into the Future

But this time technicians have thrown away the hammers and replaced them with a very interesting looking set of rods and body picks. With the help of a light or reflection board, paintless dent repair technicians can easily identify waves or indentions in the metal. Without this light, the technician wouldn’t have the light needed to see the fine detail needed to repair the dent.
